Spread and commission: what is the difference when comparing accounts?

Spread is the difference between the quoted buy and sell prices. Commission is a separate charge where the account terms apply one. A smaller spread alone does not mean a lower overall cost.

Practical checklist

When comparing accounts, write down whether commission is quoted per side or for a round trip, the trade size and the account currency. Use the same instrument and time basis. Avoid comparing a minimum spread with another account’s live or typical spread as if they were identical measures.

Before your next step

Check the current account conditions and symbol specification. If a cost description is unclear, ask the support team for a worked example using the same assumptions. This explanation helps you read charges; it does not recommend a trading strategy or promise a cheaper outcome.
